Statement of Need
In the United States, approximately 1 in 59 children have autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairment in social interaction and communication, a restricted range of activities, and repetitive behaviors. Symptoms of ASD are variable, but universal screening before the age of 2 years and prompt referral for diagnostic assessment enables young children with ASD to begin interventions that can produce durable improvements in cognitive and adaptive behaviors. Too often, however, many pediatricians rely on clinical judgment and do not properly screen for ASD. Additionally, advances in the understanding of ASD are leading to novel diagnostic approaches that promise to identify children with ASD earlier, who can then be enrolled in early intervention programs. Psychiatrists, neurologists, and developmental pediatricians must be familiar with current standards for timely diagnosis and early intervention, as well as advances in both areas that have the potential to affect clinical practice in the near future. This knowledge can help clinicians provide guideline-recommended care and, ultimately, identify more individuals with ASD for appropriate early intervention.
