This activity is intended for internal medicine and primary care physicians, as well as cardiologists, endocrinologists, and geriatricians.
Upon completion, participants should be able to:
- Define resistant hypertension (rHTN)
- Distinguish apparent rHTN from true rHTN by identifying factors and medications contributing to or exacerbating hypertension
- Assess for causes of secondary hypertension and choose diagnostic testing for cases with high clinical suspicion
- Implement pharmacologic management and recommend complementary lifestyle practices
- Summarize the state of interventional treatments for hypertension
Statement of Need
This activity outlines the how primary care physicians can define and treat resistant hypertension (rHTN). After defining rHTN, apparent rHTN vs true rHTN will be explored. The etiology, evaluation and treatment for secondary hypertension will be reviewed. Finally a summary of the state of interventional treatments for hypertension will be provided.
Primary care physicians and specialists need to understand how to define and treat rHTN in order to provide the best quality of care for patients as well as to improve outcomes.
